Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland is celebrated as the largest volume of fresh water in Great Britain. Only Loch Lomond has a larger surface area. It is the depth of Loch Ness that makes it the largest lake in volume, 755 feet at its deepest point.
Loch Ness is best known as the watery home of the Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as “Nessie”. Nessie was first sighted by Saint Columba in the 6th century. The Saint is purported to have performed a miracle that saved his servant from the clutches of the flesh-eating lake monster. Sightings of Nessie have continued down through the ages. In 2011, George Edwards sighted the Loch Ness Monster while sailing on his boat, Nessie Hunter IV. He has photos! Edwards claims to have been searching for the Loch Ness monster for 26 years.
Majestic Urquhart Castle, founded in the 13th century, is another of Loch Ness’ claims to fame. Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart witnessed bloody conflict throughout its 500 years as a medieval fortress. In the 14th century, it figured in the Scots’ struggle for independence and came under the control of Robert the Bruce after he became King of Scots. The castle’s history can be relived in the new visitor centre along with an array of medieval artifacts found at the castle.

From the water you can enjoy the areas historic gems, from majestic Urquhart to the small villages, crofts and farms that surround this huge stretch of water. If there is a puddle in your street have a look in that and see if you can see any sort of monster. You have as much chance of seeing one there as you do in Loch Ness.

It rained today and I checked out a couple of small puddles. I think I might have seen a couple of baby monsters—just kidding. I view the Nessie legend as a fun story to debate. However, there are those who avidly believe in her existence. Thanks for your entertaining comment.

I believe that Nessie could exist as there are a number ancient creatures around today that have existed for on this planet for a million or two, for example crocodiles and turtles. What else could still be around to amaze us, oh yeah, Nessie.
