Iceland: A Mysterious Volcanic World

Iceland has about 130 volcanic mountains. Several have erupted since the settlement of the country in 874 A.D. Two sister volcanoes are Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted recently, and Katla, located near the southern end of Iceland’s eastern volcanic zone. Katla is considered the most dangerous volcano in Iceland. In the past, a Katla eruption has almost always followed an Eyjafjallajokull eruption. This is a frightening thought. Volcanoes play a significant role in Icelandic legend. Volcanoes are associated with mythical creatures such as dragons, elves, dwarves, trolls and ogres. Legend has it that a fiery eruption is really an opening in the gates of hell. Folklore would have us believe humankind was created after the volcanoes in Iceland erupted.

  1. Yow! Hot stuff.
