Edith Piaf, affectionately known by the French as The Little Sparrow, was one of France’s greatest torch singers. Legend has it she was born en pleine air on the sidewalk under a lamppost at Rue 72 de Belleville. Her father sent her to live with her grandmother, a cook in a brothel. At the age of eight little Edith started performing with her father, a street acrobat. No good at acrobatics, she started street singing and in 1935 began finding her way into the souls of her countrymen as a cabaret singer. Soon her popularity ignited with wonderful songs like La Vie En Rose, L’Accordeoniste, Milord, L’Hymne a l’Amour and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien. It is said Piaf had two great loves, Marcel Cerdan, a French boxer, and the United States of America where she performed many times. Americans opened their hearts to her. Although The Little Sparrow died in 1963, she and her music live on all over the world.
