Fred Vargas: French Crime Writer Exciting in Two Languages

Fred Vargas, the prize-winning novelist, is popular with English readers and loved by the French who find it hard to wait for her next novel to hit the bookstores. Her stories “lose nothing in the translation.”  Two of her novels are Have Mercy On Us All and Seeking Whom He May Devour. They feature her intuitive but exasperating Commissaire Adamsberg and his partner Danglard. Their philosophy of life is as important as the solution to the mystery. The Three Evangelists introduces three unlikely researchers turned detective. Vargas herself is an archaeologist so her characters are authentic. Vargas novels are light, but full of twists and false solutions that keep the reader guessing to the end.
