In 2004 the World Health Organization reported the intentional homicide rate in South Africa to be 69 per 100,000 people, the highest rate of the 198 countries listed in the report. Austria was one of the lowest at .7 homicides per 100,000. Statistics vary according to the organization that is doing the reporting. It would be interesting to read a study that found some commonality among the countries with the highest rates of intentional homicide. At any rate, there’s lots of material out there for the murder mystery writer.
