The Anangu tribe has a long, somewhat mysterious history, steeped in mysticism and myths. They consider themselves direct descendants of the animals and humans who roamed their tribal lands during Dreamtime or creation period some forty thousand years ago. The Anangu lands extend from the area around Uluru or Ayres Rock in Northern Territory to the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia. To this day the Anangu consider themselves charged with the care of these ancestral lands. Currently, Uluru is jointly administered by the State and the local Anangu tribe. One of the ways in which the Anangu have managed their land over the centuries has been through their regular walkabouts in which they followed the Dreaming tracks left by their ancestors.
